      Preface

      Look up to the top of the mountain, to a drop in the ocean. Liu Haisu is a great painter, educator, social activist, pioneer of Chinese new art movement and founder of modern art education.

      At the age of 17, Mr. Liu founded China's first art school in Shanghai with great courage and painting friends, opening a precedent for modern Chinese art.     

He visited Europe twice, introducing western art to China and Chinese art to the west, winning international reputation for Chinese artists. In his education, he braved exploration and innovation, broke through the feudal ideological barriers, carried out such education methods as travel sketching, coeducation of men and women, publishing magazines, and wrote a brilliant page in the history of modern Chinese art. In his artistic creation, he is inclusive, integrated with China and the west. With the concept of pursuing change and boldly leading, he has created many masterpieces of famous history and held many influential exhibitions.

      In 1978, Mr. Zhang once again took charge of Nanjing Arts Institute. After the reform and opening up, Mr. Liu still put his full enthusiasm into art education and art creation.
      With the spirit of "rising and often deceiving nature",he went to Mount Huang ten times and produced many masterpieces, which became a classic legend in the history of Chinese art.
      His achievements made him become a giant in the field of modern Chinese art and art education, and he was highly respected.
      On the occasion of this cold winter, Xuzhou Museum and the Art Museum of Nanjing Art Institute jointly held a grand exhibition of Mr. Liu Haisu's works in  Xuzhou, bringing rich spiritual food to the vast audience of Xuzhou. Today, Mr. Liu's works are still shining, continuing his immortal charm and legend.

      Introduction

      Liu Haisu (1896-1994), Ming pan, Zi Ji Fang. China's contemporary painter, founder of modern art education, leader of new art movement, and art educator. He was born in Changzhou, Jiangsu Province. In 1912, he founded the first formal art school in China, Shanghai Academy of Graphic Arts (later renamed Shanghai Academy of Fine Arts) and served as the president. In art teaching, he first used human models to sketch. Although surrounded by warlords and feudal forces, he still showed his determination and attitude to uphold truth and academic dignity. He took the lead in the implementation of the travel sketching and coeducational study system in Shanghai Academy of fine arts, and founded the first professional magazine "fine arts" in 1918. In 1929 and 1933, he studied in Europe twice. After the founding of the people's Republic of China, Liu Haisu successively served as president of East China Art College and President, honorary president and professor of Nanjing Art College.

      Liu Haisu's artistic achievements are outstanding. He is good at oil painting and Chinese calligraphy and painting. He also has deep attainments in poetry and created a large number of art treasures in his life. He went to Huangshan ten times in succession, and his influence spread all over the world.
